Spectrasol
Reagents
are based
on the use
of tertiary
amines
to neutralize Hydrofluoric
Acid prior
to ICP
and ICP-MS
analysis.

The Spectrasol reagents are aqueous solutions containing tertiary amines. They were initially developed to neutralize Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) prior to ICP and ICP-MS analysis. We wanted to avoid the use of boric acid and fusions since they create a high salt load that tends to clog and etch precision ICP nebulizers such as the Meinhard concentric nebulizers.

“...Boric acid prevents the precipitation of fluorides ... but the ‘neutralized’ HF will still attack glassware and should not be aspirated into Meinhard nebulizers.”

From “The Handbook of ICP-MS”
K.E. Jarvis et al, p 194 (1992).
